Pivot Stickfigure Animator Editor's Review
There is a lot of animating software packages available for download, but most of these are very complex and are only really designed for the advanced animator with a lot of experience, this means that any amateur user may find the animating process tedious and time consuming to get your head round and use. Pivot’s Stickfigure Animator program is different, so simple that anyone can create there own short clip within 10 minutes and will generally be satisfied with the result. Due to the simplicity of it, instruction won’t be needed and unlike most animating program.
The installation of the program literally takes seconds and loads up in a flash, to greet us with its very basic interface. It’s one of the lightest programs I’ve downloaded and will happily run in the background no matter what you’re running on top of it. This piece of kit allows users to move a stick man around into various positions using the pivot points to form different stick man shapes, then a series of images can be saved to which the user makes slight changes, like you would a flick book. There is also the feature to import different pivot animals and objects that move around similarly to the stick man; such default examples are an elephant, a clock etc. but other objects can be downloaded online to enhance the animating experience. All of these objects can then be flipped around; you can change the colour of them and even create your own stick figures. This stops you from getting bored with the program as it can get quite tiresome and time consuming if you’re trying to create and animate your own personal designs.
All of these images you have chosen to import on to your design can be easily brought to life - once these have been sorted into a flick book style series of images, simple hit the play button and admire your handy work. Use the repeat tick box to repeat your animation and use the slider to the right of that to adjust the speed of your movie. The dimensions of the animation window can be easily changed to change the size of the whole animation to you own preference and the default white background can be changed to a more relevant image if you have one within your local directories. This is the main reason why I am so impressed with this small program – everything is variable and can be changed very easily to maximise the satisfaction of your simple, but effective finished design. This finished design can be saved into .GIF and imported into web developing programs for publishing online.
However, it can be quite frustrating trying to select your target pivot figure when you have a complex design with overlapping images. The only way to avoid this is to make sure all of your figures are different colours to avoid the black all merging into one black blob. Also, the stick figures are noticeably pixilated around the edges, which can make the animations look unprofessional and scruffy, if you’re somebody who must have a perfect end result, then this does get slightly annoying after creating a few animations.
Overall, I think this is a brilliant program and I would strongly recommend to anyone, whether it is for animating, even for a bit of fun or boredom curing. It is very easy and enjoyable to use, and doesn’t take up too much time for a great result, therefore I would rate this program 4/5 stars; only one star deducted for the small restrictions that Pivot Stickfigure Animator has on the more advanced animators and movie makers.
Can I run Pivot on a Mac or under Linux, etc? The current version of Pivot will only run on Windows. However, you can use Boot Camp to run Pivot on a Mac with a recent version of OS X.
